What would your second choice be?
Posted by: Mira Delaire - 01-29-2019, 04:46 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (25)

We all know and will be able to figure out what your favorite House is, but what about your second favorite? What's the House that when you get sorted into it you're like 'meh okay'? What would you personally choose?

If I wasn't sorted into Slytherin, I would be either a Gryffindor or a Ravenclaw. Funnily enough on Pottermore I'm sorted into Gryffindor very often but I've never once been put into Ravenclaw for some reason. Yet on other tests my Ravenclaw and Slytherin are pretty even(more leaning towards Slytherin).

I'd personally choose Ravenclaw but I'd let the hat put me in either, wherever it would think I'd be better suited. How about you?

Edit: Don't understand why you dislike my thread @Albert Sterling as this is definitely suitable for a Harry Potter "General Discussion" thread, lol k.

Exclamation Disable Reactions if abused
Posted by: 12 year old - 01-29-2019, 04:14 PM - Forum: Forum Suggestions - Replies (41)

(1) In-game name & Steam ID (can be obtained by the TAB menu in game, or by using steamid.xyz) STEAM_0:0:160726125 Luke Savage Selwyn

(2)Your suggestion: Disable the use of reactions for people who don't use them properly. someone just putting an off topic on this thread when it isn't doing anything wrong.

(3) What made you feel that this change was necessary or would make a great addition: People have been disliking my posts and it just shows how fucking immature they are and they can't let anything go. even without me in the situation, people do it to others they dislike. Example: i dislike Albert's threads and comments just because i hate albert (just an example, not really what i think)

(4) List what you think (if any) could be possible negatives if your suggestion were to be added: people will think its unjust that they get it taken away and spam threads or something to get it back.

EDIT: Even if I don't look at it, it shows how many dislikes you have in total so people may look at my profile and think "oh this person has lots of dislikes, they must be a bad person, i'll help with the dislikes". I even asked users who looked at my profile and a few of them said that was what they did when they first saw me on the forums.

Star Building Magic

- Tips on building magic -
╚═══*.·:·.☽✧    ✦    ✧☾.·:·.*═══╝

Me being me I often chase you guys off my building zones until it is complete. But lately I have noticed the increase of curiosity about Gmod building and many of you asking to stay to watch my builds and perhaps learning something. Therefore, I decided to make this thread to give some tips to those of you who are interested in building. Whether you currently are staff on sbs, or planning to become one or simply just want to learn building, this might be interesting for you.

Keep in mind though, this is just a number of tips and advises and not a proper guide to build. Hopefully at least some of you will find this helpful.

My introduction
My name is Celine, I am a Gamemaker on Hogwarts RP server since November 2018. I joined the server on February 3 2018, and when I first discovered the GM rank it was my dream to one day become one. There was one thing that ended that dream and it was me not knowing how to build and I gave up. In September I became a moderator and it might come as a surprise but the first build I’ve ever completed on Gmod was The Gallows Tree I made mid October 2018. All staff had opportunity to try building a Halloween decoration for the server and I decided to give it a try. It was the best decision regarding SBS I’ve ever made. Since creation of the Gallows Tree building became my passion and I absolutely love it, since then I was building in single player on daily basis. I did my first event on November 9th – The Moonlight Fair as a temp GM and shortly after applied for GM and got the position.

See, often we don’t even know if we might be good at something until we actually try it.

Find your style
We all have our tastes and preferences when it comes to things. To find your style think of what is appealing to you in terms of builds and props. Finding your style can be quite a journey sometimes and requires some experimenting. I personally prefer to use a lot of nature elements in my builds, especially water and trees/bushes. Some of us prefer a more technical build with a lot of functions, while some enjoy a more aesthetic style.
Adding a personal touch to your builds is a big plus. Make your builds recognizable, so that people would easily tell it is you, who built it by adding your iconic elements to it. Adding easter eggs and secret areas going to make your builds even more interesting, enjoyable and memorable for others.

Your workspace
By workspace I mean actual space of build. For beginners I strongly recommend completely flat surfaces, which you may find in single player maps. For those, who build on our server I recommend my favorite space next to QP where the ground is relatively flat.
Struggle to find an even space? Build on a big block in the air.

With time try to find areas that are more and more uneven and challenging, especially places with permaprops like buildings and hills on single player maps or even the forest on our server.

Practice, practice and then practice some more!
We all know that practice makes perfect. If you really want to get into building, try doing it every day. You don’t have to spend hours upon hours on it, but at least try to make something daily, no matter how big or small the project will be. I personally build every single time that I am on Gmod, that’s also why I have the Adventure Time mini daily event, I get to practice, and you get something out of it.

Challenge yourself
Another good advice is to give yourself challenges, think over the areas you don’t believe you are any good at and try it anyway. Some people find it tricky to build symmetrical builds, some struggle with decorating and so on. For me the toughest build so far was the Ugly Upside Down House, when I manually rebuilt the house from Ugly House event completely upside down. It was tricky and it really was hurting my brain, but I learned a lot from it.

Ask your friends for ideas and requests and build from them, even if it is out of your comfort zone. It is thanks to Konrad we have The Church of Sacrifice and thanks to Seraphin we have The Anime Courtyard.

Recently I broke my main hand, and two days after it happened, I already started to miss Gmod and building. I forced myself on and attempted building and I did it. The Elf Ruins PVP zone is indeed built with a broken hand, I paid a price for my silly “bravery” as it hurt really badly afterwards, but for me it was a challenge and I am proud I was able to complete it.

Completing challenges like that will give you more confidence and inspire you to do things even greater than you think you could.

This kind of falls into challenges in a way. Basically, by transforming I mean take the same space, for example mid courtyard and try to transform it to a completely different place each time. Give it a completely new feeling. This is a lot of fun to do and I experimented a lot with it for our mid courtyard.

Effects are your friends
But Celine, effects don’t really dupe that well? Well true. However, I lost count of how many times the effects saved my dupes. Effects I use the most are the fern bushes, ivy, and flowers. Yes, they can be a pain to place and yes, they don’t save on our server, so they must be spawned and placed manually every time but believe me they are worth it.

Effects add mass and texture to your builds, often by using bushes I make the builds slightly more realistic by hiding the sharp corners of the blocks. In addition, considering our map is quite flat when it comes to grass texture, adding bushes to your outside builds give you a more realistic feel and make the place look less empty.

Lights, materials and colors
Let start off with lights, although they are mostly efficient on night maps, lights are extremely important. And not just as a source of light, which is obvious. Lights can completely change the entire way you build looks and “feels” like. By changing different colors of light, you can affect the atmosphere and message of your builds. Think about colors and what they represent, is it a warm or cold color? Here is my general interpretation of colors for builds:

Yellow and orange – cozy, homey places
Blue, purple and green – magic and mystery
Red – scary, dangerous places

Want to practice with lights on night maps? Easy! I found night versions of standard single player maps in workshop, they work amazingly, simply search for them.

Using color and material for props is a lot of fun. Experiment with different materials you have and try to study them, remembering each and every one. A tip with colors, the less bright and strong they are, the more realistic your build will look. I also recommend creating a palette by using small blocks to find what colors work well with each other.

Learn the tools
Tools are a lot of fun and if you don’t know much about them you will be missing out. You can read guides on them, but my advice is to experiment with them as well. There is a lot of material to cover so an idea will be to use a new tool every day.

Manual over automatic (regarding precision tool)
Yes, tools are fun, and we need to know them, however at start I would recommend try to build manually. Try to completely forget about the precision tool for a while. For example, instead of snapping a wall onto the floor, practice placing it manually. Is it a pain in the butt area? Sure, but it will give you valuable practice and you will get used to being precise without any tool.

Limits give us freedom
Now this might sound silly and believe me I am a big fan of having many props options I can pick from. However, when you’re just learning building, try to limit yourself to a small amount. If you’re looking for workshop props you can play around with, my advice is – don’t get too many. Having few at start is helpful as you will be able to properly study each and every one of them, which will make your building process fast and efficient. Another thing is to try and reuse the same prop to create something completely different out of it. More often than not a creative reuse of a prop will look even better and give a nice personal touch to your build.

Having a limit also gives us a certain freedom, you see, when you know your limits it is easier to find the idea, silly enough. Limiting yourself to fewer props will also force you to think more creatively and that way you will get used to it and deliver even better results. Simply start with few and increase over time.

Inspiration and where to find it
Well…everywhere! I get inspired by art, by other video games, by movies, by music, by dreams even. A good place to find inspiration is to go on Pinterest, just try it and search for “Fantasy places” and you’ll see what I mean. Listening to music that is themed as your build is helpful too. I love listening to instrumentals, especially Celtic music when I build.

Believe in yourself!
Don’t doubt your skills and push yourself forward every day. Even if you feel like you can’t build at all, just try it and be patient. It might not happen overnight, but if you are passionate about learning, as I said, with practice you will make it happen. Be proud of your creations and your progress, and don’t feel bad if something doesn’t go as planned right away, we all started at 0. If I can do it, so can you <3

Feel fee to ask any questions regarding building you might have! I would love to hear if those tips were useful to you and I would also love to see screenshots of your builds :)

Forum Staff Report- White the Mystic

(1) What is your name and SteamID? - STEAM_0:0:54408170

(2) What is their name? -@White The Mystic Elvish Queen

(3) What is their SteamID? - NA

(4) What did they do wrong? - Unprofessional on server report thread, including “N” word on title of thread. I understand that it was part of the report, but seems unnecessary to include it in the title. Many people would have understood a title such as “Player Report- Racist Names”. If a regular user would use that language in a thread title, they would get banned.

Would like the post taken down or title edited.

Hello there.

When I use a spell and aim in third person my spell will go up a lot.
I tried to fix it in singleplayer but in singleplayer is just works.
I asked a couple of people on the server if they know how to fix it but they have never heard of this before.
I would like to know how to fix it pls.
