Quincy Emberclaw 2nd Application - AJ - 11-21-2020

NOTE: This is a LONG application. I understand that many of you will not read it in its entirety so I have made the following summary just for you:

Summary for current staff:
I know that many of  you enjoy this game greatly, but being staff and constantly dealing with miscreants and ne'er-do-wells can honestly be a lot to deal with on days you can't or don't want to deal with it. It breaks my heart when I log into the server and PLAW is active. Please allow me to help you solve this problem. I'm not asking to be a part of your private discords, your phasmaphobia games, whatever... All I am asking is that you allow me to help you deal with troublemakers so that you can go back to enjoying this game the way it was meant to be enjoyed. In the 307 hours that I've been on the server I feel like I have learned a lot and grown quite a bit as a person. That growth and learning will not stop any time soon.

Summary for current players:
I believe that most of you come here with good intentions and just want to have fun roleplaying at Hogwarts. For those that don't, I believe in your ability to grow and improve yourself as a person. I'm not here to make you miserable, I just want to make sure that everybody has a chance to enjoy themselves on the server.

(1.)  What is your SteamID? - $STEAMID$

(1a) What is your most recent ingame name? –

Quincy Emberclaw

(1b) What is your current year level in-game? (MUST be 7th to apply.) -

6th Prestige 3rd year

(2.) What Timezone do you live in? -

Central Standard (CST) (UTC−6)

(2a) Please put what times you are most active in CST (Chicago US), so the managers know when they can expect to see you. –

I have a normal 8-5 office job in the CST time zone so expect after 5pm CST.

Here's a screenshot of my gametracker from the last 30 days:

(3.) How old are you? -

(4.) When did you first join our server and how did you discover it? –

I first joined around 4/17/20 but it looks like I may have played on this server at some point earlier if gametracker is to be believed. I discovered it by watching a youtube video.
I will be real with you, CallMeKevin is my favorite youtuber and I absolutely love the GMOD RP series from him but generally despise the people who try to be cheap imitations of this comedic genius.

(4a) How can we be sure you will stay active and loyal (with your time) to Star by Star? –
It seems like there are quite a few people here who have (and still are) working hard to build an awesome community. I can respect the amount of hard work and dedication that this takes and I would love to help contribute to this wonderful community. It isn’t easy to do what you guys do. If what I have seen while playing here is reflective of the community as a whole, it’s a no brainer that I will want to stick with you guys :)

(4b) Do you understand you can be let go at ANY time for inactivity? –
Yes, I understand that if one were to abandon their duties for an extended period of time without explanation that they would not be the right person for this job. I understand that this is a privilege that is bestowed with great trust and that can be revoked without reason at any moment.

(5.) Do you understand and agree to not only comply with, but also enforce the rules of the Server when necessary? –
Of course.

(5a) When listing the rules please explain what they mean to show that you understand them.

 1: No Fail RP

Fail RP – Acting in such a manner that is unbecoming of the role that the player is currently occupying.
Students’ main job is learning; they need to spend most of their time in the classroom and not off in the dark forest fighting Voldemort. Most students come from reputable wizarding families and as such should not seek to "join the dark forces" or engage activity that could be considered "evil."
Teachers’ main job is teaching; When they are the leader of a class they need to behave in a manner that is in accordance with their job.
Prefects are students who were handpicked by the Hogwarts leadership for additional responsibility due to their excellent behavior and academic skill. These students especially should be good examples for other students and not be themselves engaged in activity that could end with them in detention.
Those are just a few examples of Fail RP. Generally I find that this is one of the rules I see enforced the least and that’s probably for the best; this is GMOD after all and understandably sometimes short workarounds and immersion breaks need to occur in order to smooth the flow of the game overall.

2: No disrespectful, hateful, offensive language and behavior

Behind every character model on the server is a real life person who chooses to spend their free time playing Hogwarts RP with us. We should show respect to each other as if we were speaking to someone in the same room.
Players who come to the server with the sole intention of inciting controversy by spamming voice/text chat are not welcome here in my book. It is extremely easy to find players like this because they often say the most controversial or outlandish things they can think of and do not stop even after repeated warnings to COOL IT.
In addition, I believe that harassment also falls under this rule. When a player asks another to stop a behavior that they do not wish to participate in (often verbal teasing), the offender should stop what they are doing and leave the other player alone. Repeated targeted harassment after being told to stop is not a behavior that we should tolerate.
At the end of the day, we are all here to have fun playing HWRP. People from all over the world and all walks of life deserve equal opportunity to enjoy their time with us; those that seek to disrupt this enjoyment for their own nefarious ends need to be reminded of this fact.

 3: No Random Deathmatch

We are at Hogwarts. Everybody knows that students are not supposed to even use magic outside the halls! Could you imagine the kind of shock that would reverberate throughout the wizarding world if a student were to die at Hogwarts? It is supposed to be one of the safest places in the wizarding world!
As such, we should strive to keep the amount of death at Hogwarts to a minimum. Students should not be killing anybody. Teachers should definitely never kill a student (even if they plan to bring them back with a resurrection potion. I learned this lesson the hard way).
The people who host and make this game available for us have dedicated a class slot called “Lockdown” during which everybody can get all the RDM out of their system so this is the only time where people should be dying.
That being said, I understand that this is a game about casting spells so there is some leeway with regards to casting spells like stupefy on other students. Normally these incidents are not big deals but if a student is constantly disrupting classes / other RP situations with their spell casting in order to irritate people, we should try to correct this behavior

4: Obey staff and RP leaders

This ties back to rule #1, no failRP. When the headmaster of Hogwarts tells you, a student, to jump… you ask him “how high?” while you are in the air. We are all here to have a good time and RP leaders usually have the experience and wit to provide everybody with an enjoyable experience. As such, as long as RP leaders are not actively encouraging others to break server rules, we need to follow their lead. In the event that someone has been revealed to be a less than adequate RP leader, we need to take that into consideration at a future time and not cause problems with an active RP scenario.

 5: No massive free spelling

If you and your buddies want to go back behind the school and have a stupefy extravaganza with each other then I see no problem with that.
What I do have a problem with is people who free spell unwilling targets, especially targets that are actively involved in a class or RP situation. People who Everte teachers while they give out homework or that just constantly spam damaging/annoying spells in class should be reminded that their source of fun should not come at great expense to others.

 6: No Metagaming

Metagaming is using knowledge that you should not have (due to role play scenario and jobs) to gain an unfair or otherwise bullshit advantage over other players. Examples of this include:
Phone hacking – having a friend spectate and call things out to you through an external voice channel.
Attacking unrevealed Dark forces at inappropriate times (not lockdown)
Switching to certain classes to more easily move around the map during certain situations (becoming auror to get apparition for potions class, toggling between 2 classes to move around the map, etc. )

 7: No Mic/chat spam

Mic spammers use the power of their voice channel to disrupt others’ gameplay experience by creating/replicating loud and often annoying noises.
Here's the problem with micspamming: There are people who have the musical taste as well as the audio quality to play music that people generally enjoy. However, there are many people with atrocious musical taste and/or poor audio quality that really should just be quiet. The reality of the situation is that if you allow one person to micspam, others who fall into the latter camp will proliferate. With that in mind, only staff should be able to play audio or select people to play audio for events/RP.

8: Owlpost is for significant RP purposes only

This text channel has been dedicated for a specific purpose and as such we need to make sure that people are using it correctly. Owl post may be used by teachers to communicate important messages to students regarding their classes (PTS active, class start time, etc.) It can also be used by prefects when stating RFD as well as people wishing to buy and sell snatches.

 9: No Erotic Role Play

It is my understanding that the leaders of this server wish to create an environment that is safe, friendly, and welcoming to all. This is my goal as well. I’m 29 years old and have spoken with one or two women in my day so I understand the frustration they feel when they log in to play some Harry Potter RP and are greeted by some teenager shouting “COCK AND BALLS” in their face. It’s not enjoyable to them, it’s not enjoyable to me, and frankly we should not tolerate it on this server.
If anything I think it’s a maturity thing that can be solved by talking with the offenders. Many teenagers have never spoken to the opposite sex in any meaningful way and it’s my belief that being a good role model here can be more effective than reaching for the ban hammer.

10: Do Not avoid the AFK system

The length of ban you can recieve for AFK exploiting doesn’t seem worth it when you consider how tiny of an amount of XP you get from being AFK.
People walking in corners, using binds to move aimlessly around the map, those are examples of exploiting the AFK system.

(5b) Expain what the term "minge" means, when referring to a player on the server –
Minge refers to a player that is unfamiliar with the rules or even how to play the game, often due to the fact that they are a new player, but sometimes due to more nefarious intentions.
I have a few simple tests to determine if a person is a minge. So far they have been very accurate:
Follow this simple command- if a player is unable to complete the simplest of tasks such as “follow me”, there is a good chance you may be dealing with a minge.
Acting overly confused – Minges get confused by even the most basic of obstacles
Obvious rule breaking – most people know not to shout the n-word over and over again

(6.) Tell us about yourself and why you want to be staff on SBS? (100 words or less) –

I’m a pretty chill dude who just wants to have some fun playing Harry Potter RP after a long workday.  I feel like I’m pretty reasonable and have a good amount of life experience to be fair and impartial. I work in IT for a fortune 500 company. I also religiously record all my game sessions on the server. Here's my current HWRP folder:

(7.) What do you feel you need to improve on the most? –

I could be better at Roleplaying. I honestly enjoy seeing other people who are more skilled at RP than me do their thing and just being there to make sure that things go smoothly.
Contrary to what Joey may believe, not everybody on the staff team needs to be 100% dedicated to creating RP experiences, there also need to be enforcers that are there to make sure that the RP goes well.

The classroom is where you will find me most of the time, it's my favorite part of the game. I constantly hear: "prefect more" "teach more" and now I am hearing "participate in non-class RP more" so I guess I should participate in more non-class RP. I hope the goalposts don't move again!

In addition, I've learned a great deal about being a member of this community in the time since my last application. I've called the National weather service many times since then and will be more careful when discussing extreme weather phenomenon in the future :P
(8.) How would having you on staff benefit our server and what sets you apart from the rest of the applicants? –
I feel like I have a level of maturity that many applicants do not have. I also find it extremely satisfying to deal with rulebreakers, I enjoy it greatly. I try to avoid sending people to detention when possible through the power of COMMUNICATION but sometimes a little force is necessary. If given the authority to put people in sits, I believe I have the skills and ability to correct misbehaving player's behavior even better than I already do by just prefecting and teaching.
(9.) Have you been staff/are currently on any other servers? If so, which ones? (List them if possible) -

(10.) Have you ever been banned on any Garrys Mod/SBS servers? If yes, then please list when, how long, and the reason. -
No, Never. Not to my knowledge.

(11.) Are the Server staff or the players more important? Why? –

Staff are obviously more important than players. Anybody with $10 can hop on this server and cause chaos but it takes a person with a heart of gold to want to wade through all the mess and make the game enjoyable for all.

(12) How would you rate your skills overall out of 10 (EX: Patience, response time, etc) –

Patience 10
Communication 8
Honesty 8
Activity 9
Grammar 9
Response time 7
Leadership 8
(13.) If you do not know how to handle a situation in a mod-sit, what do you do? –
Before I began any course of action that I am not sure about I would seek the advice of someone wiser if they are currently available. In the event that there is no one available and the situation called for immediate action, I would use my best judgement to deal with the situation at hand. If the situation did not call for immediate action, I would seek to postpone action until I could consult with a wiser 3rd party.
(14.) You understand and realize, that by applying for staff on the server also means, that you are sacrificing the complete freedom of being able to RP freely all the time without any interruptions, and are obligated to handle all server issues at hand no matter the situation? -
I welcome it. Like I stated earlier, I'm not the greatest at RP but I do enjoy seeing what you guys are up to and making sure that it goes smoothly. I would have no problem if I were no longer able to RP and I also feel like my presence would allow other staff members to engage in their RP more freely while I handle the miscreants.

(15.) Please make a list of all previous staff applications, a link to them, and the reason they were locked. If they were accepted, please give a short explanation of why you are no longer staff. (Disregard if this is your first application) –

Quincy Rupert Chills Moderator Application ( - I requested lock.

RE: Quincy Emberclaw 2nd Application - Emily Broomhandle - 11-21-2020

+1 really detailed and well written application with a clear understanding of how staff should be.

I haven’t seen you teach a lot so work on that :)

Good luck!

RE: Quincy Emberclaw 2nd Application - Jerome - 11-21-2020

I don't think you are dedicated enough to roleplaying

RE: Quincy Emberclaw 2nd Application - ArmPitt The Hungry - 11-21-2020

I have seen a few friends apply and never felt the need to reply till now. I 100% support the idea of Quincy Emberclaw in this position.

Quincy has been around since the first time I joined the server and logged most of my playtime hours with me. I have enjoyed meeting and playing with Quincy and consider him a friend.
I constantly try to make random RP in the class room and out of the class room. I enjoy perfecting and am a pretty light weight for enforcing with the detention stick. I prefer to just /dos most of the time. I have witnessed countless times that Quincy has done great prefect work. We have spent a lot of prefect law time together and created a balance of the chaos.

As a teacher I know I can expect a great class room if Quincy is perfecting. This is the time where I get to shine and make fun for the class as a teacher because of his actions. He promotes an environment for the best RP creation to take place.

I have gotten to hear Quincy talk kindly and firmly to players who are misbehaving, mic spamming, and free spelling as detention warnings. I always found this extremely brave. It takes a lot to talk to someone who might not care about what your saying. It is easy to expect them to yell 'shut up' and 'who cares' and it happens often. I have found Quincy's actions at these time to be that of someone who makes a great moderator.

Now my friendship with Quincy is different then any other. We aren't buddy-buddy in how we act and talk. We have friendship through respect and like Juri Kim, Bert, and many of the game-makers and staff I've had the privilege of playing with, they are respected by me for making the game fun for me through opportunity.

I look forward to playing with you Quincy and hope the best for your application. I believe you would be able to make the environment better and cover time that otherwise falls into prefect law. I have seen your efforts to record, make great memes, and play by the rules and for everyone to have fun under the rules. I think you and I share an understanding of what RP should be and strive for it. Keep in mind ways that you can continue to grow as a player so you always keep improving.

In the ways of the forums +1

Quote:Contrary to what Joey may believe, not everybody on the staff team needs to be 100% dedicated to creating RP experiences
Can't even read a thread correctly, people were saying an applicant should get mod because they were good at rp, when I said his rp was shit. Mr. Emberclaw thought that I said, "The staff team needs to be 100% dedicated to creating RP experiences"

If Mr. Emberclaw cannot read a chain of messages on a forum board how is Mr. Emberclaw going to handle a sit. -1 because he tried to take a dig at me that was completely baseless.
Try again Bucko

Thank you for your reply Joey. To avoid unnecessary drama I have sent you a PM on the forums. Let’s discuss this issue further there.

RE: Quincy Emberclaw 2nd Application - Karen Crowdy - 11-21-2020

I thought this was a very well thought out application. I've seen Quincy's drive to help others and make this server better. Not to mention, he definitely knows the rules and his application demonstrates his ability to learn from mistakes.

I've seen him as a Teacher and although he isn't a roleplaying master, I don't believe this is the be all end all. He puts in the effort and when it comes to roleplaying, it's really all about having fun, while staying within the boundaries of the rules. @Jerome

I would love to see him receive a trial as a Mod. I don't think he would let anyone down.

RE: Quincy Emberclaw 2nd Application - Garbo - 11-21-2020

-1 agreed with Joey

RE: Quincy Emberclaw 2nd Application - Juri Kim - 11-21-2020

Starting off, I'm really happy that you decided to apply for staff!
You're actively reporting heavy rule breakers and are constantly on a teaching or prefect role. Your app is also well done

A hugeee +1. Would love you see you get a shot at trial mod <3

RE: Quincy Emberclaw 2nd Application - STEAM_0:1:1270655 - 11-21-2020

I find Quincy to be easy to get along with, but maybe you blow things out of proportion sometimes. As far as on the forums, I remember the whole "Justin is in Haiti" thing and you were sold on the fact that he went there and took it very seriously, and kept responding to trolls about it. Other than that I find your posts to be decent.

In-game, Quincy's tends to be a positive influencer and doesn't really cut into other peoples' RP in negative ways. In essence, he knows how to let things "breathe."

Your #6 is a weird flex, you don't need to show a pic of filesize of all your footage, when are you gonna have the time to go through it all?

I like what I've read of your app so far, but I need to be in a "story reading mood" to read it through, which I'm not in right now.

Currently neutral with a positive leaning, will change after I give the app a thorough read.
