Applicants Steam ID - STEAM_0:1:56225692

(1.) Do you agree to and accept the Volunteer Staff Application Terms & Conditions? If so, please answer with "Yes, I do agree and accept these terms and conditions." - Yes, I do agree and accept these terms and conditions.

(1a.) What name and or alias are you most commonly known as within the SBS community? - Ariel Lionheart

(1b.) What is your age? - 24

(2.) Which volunteer community staff position is your application for? - Staff Manager

(3.) Approximately, when was the first time that you joined our community and how did you initially discover it? - I joined during August 2017. I discovered the server through a group of friends that I saw playing the game. I never knew a server like ours existed, and I was really intrigued, so I joined them and stayed ever since.

(4.) Community staff are held to a much higher standard both in general and with activity when compared to standard game server staff. In this case, do you understand that you can be let go at any time for excessive inactivity at our discretion? - I absolutely understand. My activity is something I am currently working on. This is something I will address at the end of my app.

(4a.) How can we be certain that you will remain active on the server upon being accepted for a volunteer staffing position? - I have been on this server for over 5 years now. This server is like a second home to me, all my friends are here, I met my boyfriend here, I couldn’t at this point in my life imagine leaving.

(5.) Tell us a little about yourself and why you would like to be accepted for a volunteer staffing position on SBS. (100 words or less) - I really enjoy being staff on our server. I’ve been an admin twice, and on my second run for a while now. This server is like a second home to me.

When the big boom happened, it felt like I was losing something special to me. It was because of these reasons that I really wanted to assist with rebuilding the server, and want to continue to do so as staff manager. I also think that what made me enjoy staffing so much was due to the wonderful staff managers we’ve had over the years and I hope I can do the same.

(6.) In your opinion, which quality of yourself do you feel that you need to improve on the most? - I think that something I need to work on is my tone and wording. There have been moments where I’ve started joking around with others and I’ve ended up saying something I intended as a joke, but came off the wrong way.

I always try my best to reach out when something like this happens and make sure everything is alright between me and the other person, and I’ve been trying to work on it because I would never want to hurt a friend's feelings, or anyones for that matter.

(6a.) In your opinion, which skill set of yours do you feel that you need to improve on the most? - Probably time management. Because of my current work schedule and health situation that I will speak on at the end of my app, I find that when I get home I don’t really know what to do with myself at the moment, but my currently situation will be improving soon as my work will be quieting down and I will be taking a break from it.

(7.) How would having you on our volunteer staff team benefit our community and what qualities set you apart from the rest of the applicants? - I have a lot of experience on the staff team. I’ve been around for about 6 different staff managers, and an admin with 5 of those. I’ve been on the server through a lot of updates, changes and through the big boom we just recently went through.

I understand what works and what doesn’t, and I believe I would be able to help see through the changes we make as we work on Galaxy of Magic. I’m a friendly person and I love making new friends. It doesn’t matter who you are, I am always willing to answer anything you have and be respectful. My DMs are always open and I always want to help in any way I can, and I’m always willing to give feedback when asked.

(8.) Have you ever previously maintained a game server staffing position, or currently are, on any other Garry's Mod servers? If so, which ones, and in which staffing positions? (List them if possible) -
I have only ever spent my time on SBS.

(9.) How would you rate your skills overall out of 10 (E.g., patience, response time, etc.) -
Patience - 8, I try my best to be really patient but like others I have had my moments and I acknowledge that.
Response Time - 10, I always reply to my DMs when someone reaches out, and I am always quick to my sits.
Approachability - 8. I really love to help, but I have found that sometimes others have found me intimidating, which I really would like to work on, as it is not my intention at all.
Communication - 10, I will say it like it is and be honest with people especially when it is needed. I always like to make sure what I’m saying is clear and easy to understand.
Honesty - 10, I think it’s important not to just sugar coat things and brush things under the rug when it is something that is keeping someone from reaching their goals. My feedback will always be clear.

(10.) Provide a couple of examples of situations or issues you may encounter and how you would handle them in the position you are applying for -

Staff member is caught leaking - This has been an obvious issue in the past. I would like to go through a step system. First step would be to announce to the team that a leak has happened, and address the severity to the team. If it were a very minor thing that could possibly have been an accident, I would address that to the team and tell the individual to be more careful. If the leak is a more serious one, then I would give them a chance to come forward before actions are taken.

The second step would be to give time for the individual to come forward, and in that time gather any evidence of the leak. After some time has passed, I would do one more announcement to the team explaining that evidence has been received and this will be the staff members last chance to come forward.

Third step would be if the individual has not come forward and I have received evidence of them leaking, then they would be pulled into a meeting and removed from the staff team. If the individual does come forward, then they would be given a suspension pending a decision on whether or not they will be demoted based on the context provided from the staff member.

Staff member is inactive - Life happens sometimes and we have issues managing our lives and squishing server time into that. I would first take a look at whether they’ve communicated what’s going on through LOAs already, then I would reach out to the staff member and speak to them about what’s going on and if they’ve not already explained, ask them why they haven’t been on the server for a long period of time.

After listening to their reasons, I would ask them what they would like to do, whether that be to resign or work on their activity. If they would like to continue to work on it, I would give them a time frame, for example 1 or 2 weeks, to work on their activity and check back with them after that time passes. If their activity has gone up, that’s great, and I’ll discuss with them the next goal for their activity. If their activity has not improved in that time, I would have another chat with them about their reasons why, and give them another chance.

Sometimes people just need a little help and encouragement getting there. Obviously if after those chances the activity does not improve, then we’d probably have to start looking at alternatives.

Staff Report - If a staff member on the team is reported on the forums, I would thoroughly read through what the OP has to say, and take a look at the evidence provided. After that if the evidence is sufficient enough, I would get the staff member in a meeting with me to explain their side of the story.

There have been reports in the past that look bad to one side that doesn’t have all the answers, or sometimes there’s simply just a misunderstanding that needs to be cleared up. I would also try to have a discussion with the OP about the situation to get any more context they may have left out of the report and try to establish a timeline for all the events.

If the staff member is found to have been in the wrong, depending on the severity of the situation, I would take a look at their history as a staff member and whether or not they’ve had this issue before. If they have not and it’s not an immediate demotion scenario, then I would likely give them a talk and a warning. If they have had this issue before, I would give them a suspension, then a demotion if the behavior continues.

(11.) If applicable, please provide a list of all your previous volunteer staff applications, provide a link to them if possible, and list any reasons why they may have been locked. If they were previously accepted, please provide a short explanation of why you are no longer volunteer staff at the time of this application. (Disregard if this is your first application) -

No links available due to the move from our Enjin forums, as well as the great purge of 2022.
Moderator application - Accepted as moderator on New Years Eve 2017, then promoted to admin in about May 2018. I resigned later that year due to issues at the time with some bullying in the community and just an overall bad time that is fortunately no longer an issue.
Moderator application - Accepted as moderator again in February of 2019, and promoted to admin for the second time in June 2019. Still going on this run :)

Additionally, I’d like to address my activity: My reasons for LOA were discussed with our current interim staff manager before I went on it. This time of the year is VERY busy in the line of work that I am in and my schedule has been all over the place and I have been working a lot of long hours. I also don’t mention this much but feel it’s important for the sake of this application that I’ve also been dealing with some health issues which is another reason my activity has been wobbly for a while.

My activity with work will be calming down soon however, and I will also be taking time off work this month to have surgery, and during the recovery time off work, this will allow me to work on my activity and be more available to the position.

+1 yes very good i support this

RE: Ariel Lionheart's Staff Manager Application - Sibyl - 09-08-2022

I'm so happy you applied Ariel :)

Two things that I think are really important in a staff manager, and what sets you apart from one or two of the other applicants, is having a friendly personality and being approachable, both which I think you definitely have. You're one of the nicest people I've seen in the community and you've also been apart of the staff team for a very long time now, so I have no doubt that you have the knowledge and understanding to do well if you were to get the position.

Overall I think you're the best choice and would really push the server in the right direction if you were to get it.

RE: Ariel Lionheart's Staff Manager Application - Ryte Lionheart - 09-08-2022

I cannot vote because of long time bias for her, but I think she has the best interests of our staff team in mind. She was always happy to staff and always participated on the other platforms when she wasn't able to get on.

This to me is an important distinction because it doesn't show a lack of interest for sbs, but more her doing what she realistically can when she can't make it on.

She's seen a lot of different managers come and go, and seen which of these managers made people and staff the happiest. I can say with confidence she will follow through with everyone's mental state and well being as a top priority. She would be the safest pick

Good luck xoxo

@Charlie Allman It's completely fine to give a comment, it's been done before and this isn't something new.

RE: Ariel Lionheart's Staff Manager Application - Joey - 09-08-2022

I don't play enough to have an educated opinion on your ability to be a Staff Manager, but I do think someone being a Staff Manager whilst their partner is apart of the Staff Team is a bad idea. Unless you made a statement to recuse yourself from any decision that has to do with Ryte this is a big no from me.

RE: Ariel Lionheart's Staff Manager Application - Charlie Allman - 09-08-2022

You consistantly were on LOA for almost all of your time as staff as far as I am aware, have been LOA a lot since GOM started. So why should the community put trust in you when you are so distant from it especially now. Other applicants have a lot more activity then this..
No vote till clarified

Lemme edit rq

Edit Numero Uno : As far as i'm aware you have never showed any sort of interest in getting staff manager and could you just be wanting to get this position is more of a power grab for you S/O?

Hey Joey,

I understand the concerns you have, and I figured that someone would be wondering about what I would do if a situation would ever come up with Ryte. There have been managers and applicants in the past with other staff members close to them and they have been able to manage this without bias, and that is something that I am also certain I would be able to do. I have no issue with telling Ryte when he's done something wrong, and I have had no issue abstaining from voting when needed in the past. If there was a situation involving Ryte, I have full confidence in being able to handle it correctly as a staff manager should.

Hey Charlie. I get where you're coming from and understand the concerns you have regarding my activity. If you haven't read it already, I did write a little bit of context at the end of my app. I would also like to clarify that any LOAs I have taken in the past have been communicated beforehand with the previous managers and approved, as well as my most recent LOA being communicated with Yaycob as well. Before moving on to your question, I would also like to clarify that my gametracker is heavily missing my recent activity as I have not been participating in PVP, rather roleplaying and building, and as one example is missing a large chunk of the 3 and a half hours I spent on today.

During the times I have been unable to hop on the server, I have made sure to keep myself available and active both in the community discord, as well as the staff ones and always remained open, communicative, and aware of any changes. During the time when the server was down as well, I was a very active participant in getting the server back on its feet and as such I have a strong understanding about the current state of the server. I have no doubt that I would be able to continue to do so as well.

Also to address your edit, I actually have had a bit of interest in the past but decided not to apply because I had strong support in another applicant receiving the position. I decided to apply now because of the interest I had in the past, as well as wanting to assist in a much more stronger way I feel I am ready to take. Finally, I will reply no, there is no part of me wanting the position simply to power grab for Ryte. I simply want this position for myself, which has nothing to do with him.

I hope this clears up any concerns, and if you have any questions about anything I've said here and want me to go in more detail, feel free to send me a message on discord and I will elaborate. Avellaa#6492.

RE: Ariel Lionheart's Staff Manager Application - Amelius Altera - 09-11-2022

Since activity concerns were brought up in this thread, this is an accurate tally of Ariel's activity on the server, and is not sensitive to any PVP.

https://imgur.com/ulGFpbf

I don't have any activity data on non-staff players, unfortunately

RE: Ariel Lionheart's Staff Manager Application - Rory - 09-15-2022

Ariel is probably one of the sweetest people I know on the team
Shes experienced and honestly a great leader.

Knowing Ariel a little bit better then some of the other commenters I know shes not one to use her powers to assist someone she is close with in anything that could be seen as power abuse. To be honest using her relationship against her isn't necessarily fair. To those who mentioned it- why not question this to other applicants who have relationships on or off the team? Wouldn't anyone who were to apply and be in a relationship with someone in the community be a risk for this? Genuine question, not trying to attack anyone.

Also, shes explained her activity in her application and in her replies, I don't necessarily believe she should be attacked for it if shes sick. At least she goes on LOA as needed instead of ghosting the community until shes ready to come back (cough me cough)

Anyways I believe a lot of the points being given in the comments are due to bias opinions of her or her significant other rather then people who know her or are willing to get to know her, but of course thats just my opinion.

I think she would be a suitable staff manager C:

aur naur dont -1 me pls

RE: Ariel Lionheart's Staff Manager Application - Chris Kim - 09-15-2022

So, I'm gonna throw my opinion into here

During both of my times as staff, while Ariel wasn't the most active on the server, she was always available if anyone had any questions or needed help. She's level headed, approachable and does go out of her way to help others.

Being a staff manager doesn't exactly mean you should be fully active on the server (while it's their job to "enforce activity", the server is dying and activity is the last thing that should be focused on.), I personally feel as long as you're able to assist when needed, handle staff reports, run meetings ETC, you'd be great in the role. Pierre, who was a phenomenal manager, didn't play on the server a whole lot but he always made sure to handle his duties as staff manager.

I believe she'd be a perfect fit for this role and if she were to get it, she'd handle everything well!

+1.

I do think we should be hunting for a server manager instead of a staff manager tbh. So hopefully that'll be a thing soon enough.
