Applicants Steam ID - STEAM_0:1:126108004

(1.) Do you agree to and accept the Volunteer Staff Application Terms & Conditions? If so, please answer with "Yes, I do agree and accept these terms and conditions." -
Yes, I do agree and accept these terms and conditions.
(1a) What name and or alias are you most commonly known as within the SBS community? -
Pierre Saint
(1b.) What is your age? -
18
(2.) Which volunteer community staff position is your application for? -
HogwartsRP Staff Manager
(3.) Approximately, when was the first time that you joined our community and how did you initially discover it? -
Discovered it during Christmas break of 2017 however, began consistent activity early in 2020.
(4.) Community staff are held to a much higher standard both in general and with activity when compared to standard game server staff. In this case, do you understand that you can be let go at any time for excessive inactivity at our discretion? -
Yes, I do.
(4a) How can we be certain that you will remain active on the server upon being accepted for a volunteer staffing position? -
Since I became consistently active and joined the staff team, I have remained absorbed in the community for the entirety of my time on the team and have only decreased activity out of lack of time rather than lack of interest. Even after having started college, I try to log into the game every day and consistently check the forums/discord for staff duty.
(5.) Tell us a little about yourself and why you would like to be accepted for a volunteer staffing position on SBS. (100 words or less) -
SBS has been a major part of my life for the last year and I have fallen in love with the community and care for it greatly. I want to become staff manager because I feel that my abilities will be able to shine to their greatest extent in this position. I love guiding and leading others in a positive and beneficial way, which are exactly the duties of a staff manager.
(6.) In your opinion, which quality of yourself do you feel that you need to improve on the most? -
Something that I need to increase and improve is my activity. Since I’ve begun college it’s been tough to get on in the midst of projects/exams and maintaining my social life, however, this is something that I’ve been working to improve as I’m becoming more adjusted to college life. It’s a fact that I cannot spend hours on at a time, so I’ve remedied this by ensuring I do something memorable or fun with the server every time I’m online.

Another thing in which I definitely need to improve on is controlling my impulse decisions. Sometimes when on the server, I think to myself, “What’s the funniest/most entertaining thing I could bring to the server right now.” A lot of the time it ends up being something fun that the majority of the server enjoys, however it has gotten out of hand in the past. Some examples of regrettable things I’ve done are giving someone a fake phys gun, allowing/participating in free spelling as unarrestables, spawning weapons for a random player who I feel would make good RP with it, and giving a certain rock a questionable title (you can reach out in dms for that one if you want details). Each of these actions I’ve reflected on afterward and realized my wrongdoing. As of recent, I haven’t done anything like that, but I mention it in order to be open to the community and Jacob with my past.
(6a) In your opinion, which skill set of yours do you feel that you need to improve on the most? -
Applying this to the context of the duties I’d have to perform as staff manager, I think that I would have trouble with delivering severe punishment, at least at first. As an admin, I often try to find the good in people when deciding how to deal with rule-breaking. While I believe I’ve struck a good middle ground as an admin, it’s something that I would need to adjust as staff manager as the level of misconduct that I will need to deal with in a disciplinary sense is far greater in this position.
(7.) How would having you on our volunteer staff team benefit our community and what qualities set you apart from the rest of the applicants? -
I’d say that my biggest positive quality is my community engagement. I actively try to talk to engage with a wide array of players and never primarily stick to one group both in game and out. By doing so, I think I have been able to remain unbiased and uninvolved in drama that seems to persist in the community. I also keep a lot of my opinions to myself and only speak up on issues after weighing the pros and cons of doing so. As staff manager this would be very important as a big worry is a staff manager treating certain staff that are in groups they dislike unfairly and inserting themselves in unnecessary drama.

Furthermore, as a staff manager, I would be relatively easygoing like the predecessor. Being laid back and casual is an undervalued trait, as it helps build trust between the team and the staff manager. Having someone who is constantly serious and distanced could decrease team morale and make it more difficult to establish a bond with the team. It also allows moments in which you need to be serious all the more effective due to the greater shift in tone.

Lastly, an important duty of staff manager, as a super, is being able to work with the rest of upper management to solve community issues. In my time as mod/admin, I’ve helped management with a number of investigations regarding leaking and community risks. Solving these issues really interests me and I’ve always prided myself on doing all that can be done to help.
(8.) Have you ever previously maintained a game server staffing position, or currently are, on any other Garry's Mod servers? If so, which ones, and in which staffing positions? (List them if possible) -
No
(9) How would you rate your skills overall out of 10 (E.g., patience, response time, etc.) -
Patience - 10
When dealing with staffing matters, I always take the time in sits to fully explain the rule that the player broke to hopefully avoid repeat offenses in the future. I’m a strong believer in educating over punishing so my main goal is to help the person in the sit. I also give them time to ask questions or explain their side instead of rushing from sit to sit (within reason of course).

Knowledge of Rules - 8
While it doesn’t happen often, I occasionally blank on a rule. This usually isn’t a problem as I’m quick to fess up to not knowing and ask other staff members, giving the player accurate information.

Professionalism - 8
In pursuit of remaining as down to earth as possible, I can sometimes forget the professionalism that goes with being a role model to the community. In the past I’ve toed the line between being casual and unprofessional, however, I’ve become a lot better in the recent months to be professional and serious when necessary and casual the rest of the time.

Leadership - 9
I think I do a good job of being a good role model and leader to others. While I haven’t exercised leadership much in my position as it doesn’t call for it frequently, my history of being a sailing instructor and me currently studying finance allow me to be confident in leading others.

Approachability - 10
I like to think that I’m very open with everyone. This goes back to my strength of community engagement. Whenever I’m on I tend to not stick to a group of people and prefer to run around the school and talk with anyone I see. I also think my personality isn’t intimidating to anyone and I always try to be friendly to everyone I meet.
(10.) Provide a couple of examples of situations or issues you may encounter and how you would handle them in the position you are applying for -
Leaking From A Staff Member
Leaking has been a problem that persists with the staff team and is very damaging to the trust of the team, especially when unidentified. Upon learning that info has been leaked (depending on the severity), I would bring it up at the meeting, asking for the leaker to come forward in private to me after the meeting. Leaking is often accidental and non-malicious, therefore in those instances, I think it’s important to give them the chance to own up to it in a confidential and non-confrontational way. In doing so, they would receive either a verbal or written warning by myself, with only the other supers being informed of the identity of the leaker. In more serious instances of staff members leaking (examples could include evidence that resulted in a cban or clearly malicious and intentional behavior), I would work with Jacob to investigate the matter in private and leave it up to the leaker to come forward with the information before the investigation concludes. I have zero tolerance for this type of leaking and it will always result in a suspension or demotion. If the leaking resulted in a demotion (this would be if the staff member never came forward or actively tried to hide information from surfacing), then the staff team would be made aware of what they did as they deserve to be in the loop.

Conflict Within The Staff Team
Conflict in an environment as opinionated as this is bound to arise. For the most part, I encourage civil discourse and staff to challenge each other. Some of my biggest learning moments as a staff member have been because of conflicts or disagreements I’ve had with other staff. Therefore I don’t find it necessary to intervene as an authority figure in most instances. Everyone on the team is mature enough to be able to assess situations without a staff manager’s insertion. However, there are times in which a third party or mediator is needed. One example of a time that I would intervene would be if one or both parties approached me feeling unhappy or uncomfortable with what occurred. Another example would be if this conflict resulted in it affecting their ability to staff together or it turned into insult trading/petty arguments. In all of these cases, I would set up a private meeting with both parties and myself to try and settle it civilly. Oftentimes these sorts of conflicts ensue due to neither communicating with each other, so to be able to sit down and talk with the added help of a mediator really makes a difference. If after this meeting the behavior still doesn’t get better I would look to take further action such as having a more disciplinary-focused meeting with individuals or issuing a suspension (in extreme cases). At the end of the day, it’s foolish to assume that everybody will get along perfectly, and I understand that. Naturally, people are going to consistently disagree with others, and I’m not here to shut down conflict as long as it remains civil.

Staff Reports
Staff Reports are a great way for the community to voice concerns or report misconduct with staff that other staff or I don’t see. Because of this, when deciding whether to accept or deny a report, I will carefully read every response from community members that give their input on the thread and take it into great consideration. I will wait around 2-3 days from the initial post to give my official response in order to give the community ample time to discuss and myself to ensure I do the right thing, as well as make sure the staff member isn’t waiting for too long as it can be very uncomfortable for them while having an active report. Prior to me posting the response (unless it is a case or a joke report or no evidence), I would have a private discussion with the staff member to get their side of the story and after hearing them out, I would inform them of my decision and what exactly I will be posting on the forums. For nearly any first offense, a discussion with me and the reported staff to help them understand what they did wrong should suffice. If the abuse continues, then perhaps a suspension or a written warning following the discussion would be necessary. Finally, in extreme cases where a staff member methodically uses their staff ability to harm the server, a demotion or suggested resignation would be given.

Staff Member Hasn’t Been Meeting Activity Requirement
As staff manager, I won’t be scrolling through steam profiles to make sure everybody that isn’t on LOA meets 14 hours every 2 weeks. I will only act if I’ve noticed that a staff member has consistently not been active on the server. In that case, I would ask if they would like to go on LOA and to provide a general reason why (note: being burnt out IS a valid reason). If someone is feeling burnt out, perhaps we could discuss what caused that and figure out a solution for them, an example being a break (removal of staff abilities for a small time period to allow them to enjoy the server without answering calls). If someone decides to go on LOA, they won’t be held to this standard, however, if they need to take an extensive one (greater than a month) then all I ask is that they update their progress through their LOA every 2 weeks. If a staff member repeatedly remains inactive following our conversation, a more serious talk would follow, one in which I ask if they would like to reconsider if they even want to keep their position. If they don’t want to resign I would tell them that I will be watching their activity closely to ensure they pull their weight. If they continue to be inactive after that then they will be demoted.

Edit 1:
Ensuring Consistency Among the Team
An issue that has cropped up seemingly over and over again is different staff members punishing differently for similar rule breaks. Not only does this lead to certain staff members being labeled on a range of strict to bias (where some players begin to break these rules in front of certain staff), but it also leads to animosity within the team when some staff feel others aren't doing their job. I don't intend to take away any freedom that staff have currently, moreso to provide a general baseline to give staff some idea of what to do in situations that aren't accounted for in the staffing guide. The main issues that have cropped up are how different staff punish Freespelling on Unarrestables and RDA. Now I don't have a strong stance on either side, however, I will say that if I become staff manager I will have a team-wide discussion to dictate a common ground for how we deal with this stuff. By doing so and informing the community of these new guidelines in a public forum thread, we can eliminate the subjectivity that has gone hand in hand with these rules for so long. This is just one example of ensuring consistency, and there is plenty more to be done, however, this is one that I will enact first to avoid a continuance of conflict between staff on what to do.
(11.) If applicable, please provide a list of all your previous volunteer staff applications, provide a link to them if possible, and list any reasons why they may have been locked. If they were previously accepted, please provide a short explanation of why you are no longer volunteer staff at the time of this application. (Disregard if this is your first application) -

No doubt that you have the abilities and what it takes to become a staff manager, but you do mention starting college and how you try your best to join and help. How can you make sure that you will be up to the staff and the community's needs, and that you will be able to keep the position for long enough without having to pick another manager right after?

+1 as my vote of trust and how I know you'd do great in this position. I have no concerns apart from the one I asked and you made it clear for me. Good luck (:

I have to say I'm quite surprised by this application personally, it's done pretty damn well, I'd almost call it a bit of a wild card.

The application is accurate and you own up to actions in the past.

There's no doubt you've created what I would simply call "Chaos"  in the past that I feel can't be brushed over though.

Moments I particularly remember:

  • You starting your own "castration clinic" featuring Shrek, donkey and other prominent characters
  • You frantically riding a horse around the school mic-spamming country music
  • You giving a first year ultimate power by (if I recall) handing him a crossbow and basically making him king of the server
  • You creating a mafia rp on southside, featuring you, some staff members and others basically taking over the whole city.
  • You putting up "The Joker" against "Batman", giving them crossbows to fight each other with.

Needless to say you're an absolute maniac  sometimes.
At the same time though, it's charming and incredibly engaging for the server.

The one thing I hope from this new staff manager, is that things don't get ignored or brushed under the bus, what do I mean? Well:

The ignoring of staff applications, this is something I noticed heavily with the previous manager, applications were getting outright ignored, having no feedback given, and sometimes these applicants had actual credible qualities for being staff, they weren't some run of the mill first prestige second year who jumps at the first opportunity to get their hands on power. Yet these applications were ignored, no comment saying "Hey! Reach out to an admin or me for feedback" etc. Just outright ignored.
What I would like to see instead, is much more confrontational means of applications. If the staff team and manager feels an applicant is not suitable for the position at all, the application should be denied, and they should be told what they can do to improve their chances of being accepted. Far too many applications in my eyes reach the 30 day lock period.

Another thing is Feedback threads, countless times players asked the previous staff manager for a response to the feedback given, yet none was given. They stayed silent about it and brushed it under the carpet like it didn't matter, what I'm asking Pierre is, how will you handle these types of things, so that we don't see a repeat of previous actions?

I'll also say I do hope you can create a tight knit bond in the staff team should you get the position, as to me it's something lacking currently from a player perspective. I hope "being laid back" doesn't mean you'll allow the staff team to drift apart with arguments and quarrels and keeping grudges etc.

Ultimately, Pierre is a wildcard to me, but it would be interesting to see what you/he would do and I think the duality of him and Jacob would probably serve well.
(Etlenor brings up a good point also, can we be certain you will remain active with college going on?)

A credible +1

Hey Etlenor! So I definitely understand the concern that I will fall victim to the inactivity that has plagued super positions for a while now. During the beginning of summer this year, I had trouble getting on as I went from having hardly any work as a senior to having a job as a sailing instructor. It was a difficult adjustment at first. After a long day of work, I was tired, and couldn't summon the energy that I needed to get on. However, as my job became a more normal part of my life, I was able to balance the work better. I think a similar situation has happened with college. This being my freshman year, at first, it was a big change. I knew it would be tough at first, I took an LOA and even considered resigning at one point. As time has gone on though, I've found myself with a wealth of time and being able to maintain normal activity. I will no doubt have times in which I need to take off (ie. Exam week), however, my love for the server and community won't die out anytime soon. That is what has kept me active through all the changes in my life this year.

I get how this wording was taken this way, sorry for not being clearer. I mean laid back as in how I speak and my personality. I want my presence as staff manager to be that of a friend you can confide in, rather than someone to be intimidated by. I intend to be very proactive in ensuring the team comes closer together because, as you said earlier Toto, we are currently experiencing a large divide in the team.

This is a good point that I feel I should address. I've always held feedback threads in high regard, meaning that as a staff member, I always read them carefully to see how I can improve (specifically the ones about the team in general). I am in agreement with you that these types of threads should be discussed in a meeting and addressed by the staff manager rather than in private by staff members.

As staff manager, whenever a feedback thread is made that pertains specifically to the staff team, I will be sure to bring it up for discussion in the positive/negative feedback section. To give you an idea of what would be brought up, here are some recent threads that I feel hold a good deal of value and should be mentioned in a meeting:

Pierre has many good qualities for staff manager, I really like that he is laid back. This is garrys mod harry potter roleplay, there is no need to be professional. Acting over professional just comes off very weird, unless you are jacob nova.

my main concern is that you are not hosting great halls and prefect meetings often enough. host a great hall and I will consider giving you a +1

Like most, I’m quite surprised to see this application from you Pierre, but it’s a pleasant surprise.

The application is very well written and of course, you’ve been an active staff member. I do think you handle situations fairly well and would be good for this position.

Though as Toto stated you can be quite…chaotic. Chaos is not necessarily a bad thing, but the amount of things you can get away with because you’re not quite reaching the line does astonish me, but overall happens to a lot of staff members with the same power.

I do have some other concerns I’d rather not address here, if you’d like to ask me go on and send me a message, I’d be happy to answer.

Overall I’m more so neutral leaning +1

Good luck

EDIT:

After having the applicant reach out and had addressed my concerns, I do feel much more confident in this application. Pierre is a great choice for this position, I believe he could do many great things for this community. Things that we have lacked in.

I also did not expect to see you apply for this but I am really pleased to see that you did. I always felt that you had a very good balance of being chill with players while also being able to enforce the rules fairly. I think your application is very well written and your approaches to certain staff situations seem solid. My only concern would be your activity which you already addressed. I'm giving this a +1 and I hope if you do get the position you can keep your goons in check.

Etlenor and Toto share the same concerns I have regarding you (mostly your activity above all things), but I'm glad to see you paid attention to those things and bothered to clarify each one of them, this allows me to trust you even more. Your app looks solid too, that's another plus. As long as your personal life doesn't ruin your in-game activity and stop you from doing your SM duties once you get the position, so far you're one of my top choices. You have great potential, Pierre, and I hope to see you doing great things not only for the staff team, but the community too.
