(1.) Do you agree to and accept the Volunteer Staff Application Terms & Conditions? If so, please answer with "Yes, I do agree and accept these terms and conditions." -
Yes, I do agree and accept these terms and conditions.
(1a) What name and or alias are you most commonly known as within the SBS community? -
Tyler Reffin
(1b.) What is your age? -
24
(2.) Which volunteer community staff position is your application for? -
Staff Manager
(3.) Approximately, when was the first time that you joined our community and how did you initially discover it? -
Discovered it during Christmas break of 2017.
(4.) Community staff are held to a much higher standard both in general and with activity when compared to standard game server staff. In this case, do you understand that you can be let go at any time for excessive inactivity at our discretion? -
Yes
(4a) How can we be certain that you will remain active on the server upon being accepted for a volunteer staffing position? -
Since I became consistently active and joined the staff team, I have remained absorbed in the community the entirety of my time on the team and have only decreased activity out of lack of time rather than lack of interest. Even after having started college, I try to log into the game every day and consistently check the forums/discord for staff duty.
(5.) Tell us a little about yourself and why you would like to be accepted for a volunteer staffing position on SBS. (100 words or less) -
SBS has been a major part of my life for the last year and I have fallen in love with the community and care for it greatly. I want to become staff manager because I feel that my abilities will be able to shine to their greatest extent in this position. I love guiding and leading others in a positive and beneficial way, which are exactly the duties of a staff manager.
(6.) In your opinion, which quality of yourself do you feel that you need to improve on the most? -
Something that I need to increase and improve is my activity. Since I’ve begun college it’s been tough to get on in the midst of projects/exams and maintaining my social life, however, this is something that I’ve been working to improve as I’m becoming more adjusted to college life. It’s a fact that I cannot spend hours on at a time, so I’ve remedied this by ensuring I do something memorable or fun with the server every time I’m online.

Another thing in which I definitely need to improve on is controlling my impulse decisions. Sometimes when on the server I think to myself, “What’s the funniest/most entertaining thing I could bring to the server right now.” A lot of the time it ends up being something fun that the majority of the server enjoys, however it has gotten out of hand in the past. Some examples of regrettable things I’ve done are giving someone a fake phys gun, allowing/participating in free spelling as unarrestables, spawning weapons for a random player who I feel would make good RP with it, and giving a certain rock a questionable title (you can reach out in dms for that one if you want details). Each of these actions I’ve reflected on afterward and realized my wrongdoing. As of recent, I haven’t done anything like that, but I mention it in order to be open to the community and Guy with my past.

(6a) In your opinion, which skill set of yours do you feel that you need to improve on the most? -
Applying this to the context of the duties I’d have to perform as staff manager, I think that I would have trouble with severe punishment, at least at first. As an admin, I often try to find the good in people when deciding how to deal with rule-breaking. While I believe I’ve struck a good middle ground as an admin, it’s something that I would need to adjust as staff manager as the level of misconduct that I will need to deal with is far greater in this position.
(7.) How would having you on our volunteer staff team benefit our community and what qualities set you apart from the rest of the applicants? -
  • I’d say that my biggest positive quality is my community engagement. I actively try to rp and engage with a wide array of players and never primarily stick to one group. By doing so, I think I have been able to remain unbiased and uninvolved in drama that seems to persist in the community. I also keep a lot of my opinions to myself and only speak up on issues after weighing the pros and cons of doing so. As staff manager this would be very important as a big worry is a staff manager treating certain staff that are in groups they dislike unfairly and inserting themselves in unnecessary drama.

Furthermore, I believe the community, and the staff team, could benefit from an easygoing staff manager like the predecessor. Being laid back and casual is an undervalued trait, as it helps build trust between the team and the staff manager. Having someone who is constantly serious and distanced could decrease team morale and make it more difficult to establish a bond with the team. It also allows moments in which you need to be serious all the more effective due to the greater shift in tone.

Lastly, an important duty of staff manager, as a super, is being able to work with the rest of upper management to solve community issues. In my time as mod/admin, I’ve helped management with a number of investigations regarding leaking and community risks. Solving these issues really interests me and I’ve always prided myself on doing all that can be done to help.
(8.) Have you ever previously maintained a game server staffing position, or currently are, on any other Garry's Mod servers? If so, which ones, and in which staffing positions? (List them if possible) -
No
(9) How would you rate your skills overall out of 10 (E.g., patience, response time, etc.) -

Patience - 10
When dealing with staffing matters, I always take the time in sits to fully explain the rule that the player broke to hopefully avoid repeat offenses in the future. I’m a strong believer in educating over punishing so my main goal is to help the person in the sit. I also give them time to ask questions or explain their side instead of rushing from sit to sit (within reason of course),
Knowledge of Rules - 8
While it doesn’t happen often, I occasionally blank on a rule. This usually isn’t a problem as I’m quick to fess up to not knowing and ask other staff members, giving the player accurate information.
Professionalism - 8
In pursuit of remaining as down to earth as possible, I can sometimes forget the professionalism that goes with being a role model to the community. In the past I’ve toed the line between being casual and unprofessional, however, I’ve become a lot better in the recent months to be professional and serious when necessary and casual the rest of the time.
Leadership - 9
I think I do a good job of being a good role model and leader to others. While I haven’t exercised leadership much in my position and it doesn’t call for it frequently, my history of being a subway instructor and me currently studying finance allow me to be confident in leading others.
Approachability - 10
I like to think that I’m very open with everyone. This goes back to my strength of community engagement. Whenever I’m on I tend to not stick to a group of people and prefer to run around the school and talk with anyone I see. I also think my personality isn’t intimidating to anyone and I always try to be friendly to anyone I meet.

(10.) Provide a couple of examples of situations or issues you may encounter and how you would handle them in the position you are applying for -

Leaking From A Staff Member -

Leaking has been a problem that persists with the staff team and is very damaging to the trust of the team, especially when unidentified. Upon learning that info has been leaked (depending on the severity), I would bring it up at the meeting, asking for the leaker to come forward in private to me after the meeting. Leaking is often accidental and non-malicious, therefore in those instances, I think it’s important to give them the chance to own up to it in a confidential and non-confrontational way. In doing so, they would receive either a verbal or written warning by myself, with only the other supers being informed of the identity of the leaker. In more serious instances of staff members leaking (examples could include evidence that resulted in a cban or clearly malicious and intentional behavior), I would work with Jacob to investigate the matter in private and leave it up to the leaker to come forward with the information before the investigation concludes. I have zero tolerance for this type of leaking and it will always result in a suspension or demotion. If the leaking resulted in a demotion (this would be if the staff member never came forward or actively tried to hide information from surfacing), then the staff team would be made aware of what they did as they deserve to be in the loop.

Conflict Within The Staff Team -

Conflict in an environment as opinionated as this is bound to arise. For the most part, I encourage civil discourse and staff to challenge each other. Some of my biggest learning moments as a staff member have been because of conflicts or disagreements I’ve had with other staff. Therefore I don’t find it necessary to intervene as an authority figure in most instances. Everyone on the team is mature enough to be able to assess situations without a staff manager’s insertion. However, there are times in which a third party or mediator is needed. One example of a time that I would intervene would be if one or both parties approached me feeling unhappy or uncomfortable with what occurred. Another example would be if this conflict resulted in it affecting their ability to staff together or it turned into insult trading/petty arguments. In all of these cases, I would set up a private meeting with both parties and myself to try and settle it civilly. Oftentimes these sorts of conflicts ensue due to neither communicating with each other, so to be able to sit down and talk with the added help of a mediator really makes a difference. If after this meeting the behavior still doesn’t get better I would look to take further action such as having a more disciplinary-focused meeting with individuals or issuing a suspension (in extreme cases). At the end of the day, it’s foolish to assume that everybody will get along perfectly, and I understand that. Naturally, people are going to consistently disagree with others, and I’m not here to shut down conflict as long as it remains civil.

Staff Reports

Staff Reports are a great way for the community to voice concerns or report misconduct with staff that other staff or I don’t see. Because of this, when deciding whether to accept or deny a report, I will carefully read every response from community members that give their input on the thread and take it into great consideration. I will wait around 2-3 days from the initial post to give my official response in order to give the community ample time to discuss and myself to ensure I do the right thing, as well as make sure the staff member isn’t waiting for too long as it can be very uncomfortable for them while having an active report. Prior to me posting the response (unless it is a case or a joke report or no evidence), I would have a private discussion with the staff member to get their side of the story and after hearing them out, I would inform them of my decision and what exactly I will be posting on the forums. For nearly any first offense, a discussion with me and the reported staff can help them understand what they did wrong should suffice. If the abuse continues, then perhaps a suspension or a written warning following the discussion would be necessary. Finally, in extreme cases where a staff member methodically uses their staff ability to harm the server, a demotion or suggested resignation would be given.

Staff Member Hasn’t Been Meeting Activity Requirement

As staff manager, I won’t be scrolling through steam profiles to make sure everybody that isn’t on LOA meets 14 hours every 2 weeks. I will only act if I’ve noticed that a staff member has consistently not been active on the server. In that case, I would ask if they would like to go on LOA and to provide a general reason why (note: being burnt out IS a valid reason). If someone is feeling burnt out, perhaps we could discuss what caused that and figure out a solution for them, an example being a break (removal of staff abilities for a small time period to allow them to enjoy the server without answering calls). If someone decides to go on LOA, they won’t be held to this standard, however, if they need to take an extensive one (greater than a month) then all I ask is that they update their progress through their LOA every 2 weeks. If a staff member repeatedly remains inactive following our conversation, a more serious talk would follow, one in which I ask if they would like to reconsider if they even want to keep their position. If they don’t want to resign I would tell them that I will be watching their activity closely to ensure they pull their weight. If they continue to be inactive after that then they will be demoted.

(11.) If applicable, please provide a list of all your previous volunteer staff applications, provide a link to them if possible, and list any reasons why they may have been locked. If they were previously accepted, please provide a short explanation of why you are no longer volunteer staff at the time of this application. (Disregard if this is your first application) -

Throughout the years, Tyler Reffin has helped mold me into the person I am today. Not only is he moldy, he likes the staff team too. I have no doubt in my mind that this man will be able to reform back to the glory of the earlier SBS team. This application is written incredibly well also!!! Like really good, after reading it I think that whoever wrote this (Tyler Reffin) is very smart and educated.

Tyler is an amazing and helpful person and more than fit for the role, I would say he's swole for the role. He knows what the team needs to improve on and has demonstrated an interest in improving the server as he with upgrading things in the past. It would be a crime to let this go to someone else. His reason for not passing trial mod was frankly BS and even admins at the time would agree (one admin even did what he did in protest- cuff spawning- and didn't get any punishment on them)

This man taught Pierre Saint and Justin Amendish, our beloved former staff managers. Who else can do it better than Tyler Reffin? Hear me out, the Galaxy Of Magic staff moderation team will improve quite a lot if Tyler Reffin gets the position, no doubts. The Guy from starbystargaming.com, please don't pick someone else.

Tyler taught me how to deal with bullies. One day when I was getting thrown into lockers, he came out of nowhere and told me to suck it up! I've been skinny ever since!

THANK YOU TYLER
